Yes, I'm still alive
• all the Louis Garrel silliness in Dans Paris• rock 'n' roll weekend = Gogol Bordello after party on Thursday, Control on Friday, Stars and Jens Lekman on Saturday • reading the riot act and sticking to it this time • "Tearaway Burkas and Tinplate Menorahs" by Al Franken • Louis Theroux's documentary about Fred Phelps' church, as hilariously twisted as it was absolutely freaking scary • the 'spicy' tofu and mixed veg with lo mein and a Coke at Wok and Roll • my Merona laptop bag-meets-purse • Julia Child's My Life in France• Stephen Colbert as a teenager in I Am America (and So Can You!)• Pushing Daisies• chunky peanut butter slathered on a Special Dark Hershey bar • the exquisite anguish of Parker Posey's Nora in Broken EnglishI confess that I haven't looked at Live Journal for over three months. I haven't had regular Internet access and I've been too lazy to seek it out. I probably won't be online much for a while, so if I don't respond to things, don't be offended. | | Thursday, June 21st, 2007 | | 1:15 pm |
Feist show illyriadeity and I met up for the Feist show at the Pantages last night. The opener Grizzly Bear played their weird songs first--including flute, authoharp, and falsetto parts--and then won me over with a version of "He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss)" and a really good song that started out with "I want you to know." (I'll figure out the title later.) One of the boys looked like Terry Hall and sang like cabaret Marc Almond. The songs where he sang lead were the best, although the band did lovely harmonies. When I bought Feist's The Reminder and told the girl at the counter I was going to the show, she said, "Oh, she really gets into it live." That was no lie! Leslie Feist is about five feet tall, but she has a lot of energy and a voice that carries even without a microphone. She got the crowd to sing and even move around towards the end. She brought out a shy tap dancer for one song. Feist made "Mushaboom" pretty rockin' and got me to like "Sealion" live. Current Mood: pleased | | Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 | | 11:59 am |

summer shows
I'm nuts about Bat for Lashes' "Horse and I" and VHS or Beta's "You Got Me." Both are on my summer mix. If you're at the Pipettes show on Friday, I'll give you a copy. Oh, Bat for Lashes will be in Minneapolis in late July and I am not missing it. Also in July, Tapes 'n Tapes' free show at the Taste of Minnesota (Sweet Martha's and cute tall-y bassist, yeah, I'll be there). Kings of Leon are at First Ave. in August. My summer insomnia is setting in. Usually that means that I cook a lot. Instead last night I went through old mix tapes I've made for myself and listened to them. One of the most interesting was one I made on the sly at the warehouse circa 2002 when I should have been filing CDs. Every time I came across a song I wanted, I used the little boombox to tape it onto a blank cassette that I brought from home. I may post the tracklisting here later or in another post. Damn, I love dude comedies
I'd like to think that I'm pretty well-rounded in my viewing habits, but lately I can't get enough of frat pack comedies. It started with renting The Break Up but in the past few months, I've rewatched Old School, Starsky and Hutch, Anchorman, Dodgeball, and Zoolander. Then I had to see Talladega Nights and The 40 Year Old Virgin. I'm watching You Me and Dupree as I write this! Part of this probably has to do with my crush on Vince Vaughn. (I liked Wedding Crashers more than everyone else I know). Part of it is that these guys make me laugh a lot. All I know is that I'm really looking forward to Knocked Up and I may even pay $8 to see Blades of Glory. | | Thursday, March 22nd, 2007 | | 11:02 am |

Dean and Britta! I am really excited for the new album because I played the hell out of L'Avventura. They are coming to Minneapolis Saturday, March 17 at the Cedar Cultural Center (which I think is pretty close to the Triple Rock, but I'll have to check). I'll be damned if I miss this one! | | Thursday, February 8th, 2007 | | 3:13 pm |
crush list, top five Roger FedererThe graceful ballet of his tennis would be enough--Federer moves like time stops for him--but he is a beauty as well. Most matches are shot with the camera voyeuristically tracing his shape and showing every twitch of expression. He girlishly smooths his bangs from his forehead and touches his face between points and falls to the ground with the exhaustion and exhilaration of each tournament won. Curtis StoneI'm beginning to think that middle-aged women throw their underpants at the Take Home Chef as he walks down the street. Happily married women get this guy in their kitchens and act like fawning teenagers. I'm not really blaming them because Christ knows I can't stop watching his show. When there's a close up of him chopping or stirring, I get a little weak because he has the most beautiful hands. The rest of his tall, slim-hipped surfer's body isn't bad either. Patrick WilsonThe wounded alpha male Brad in Little Children was my wake-up call to this fella. I like that he continually plays really fucked up characters when, as attractive as he is, he could be doing loads of tossed off romantic comedies. He's a matinee idol in my book. Sam Talbot off Top ChefThe clear favorite (of mine and of his judges) from the beginning of the competition and a tall, good-looking boy as well, Sam really should've won. I think Gail from Food and Wine thought, "Well, shit, there goes my opportunity to use that mug on the cover of the magazine." It probably would've been their best selling issue too! Alex Karev on Grey's AnatomyHe's a good mix of smarminess and sensitivity. Alex is really self-important and obnoxious. I like watching him get verbally smacked around by Sloan and Izzie and Addison and Bailey more than I like watching good things happen to him. (For some reason the Internet does not have a picture of that fantastic little smirk that he always does.) runners up: Christopher Eccleston (Yeah, I've been watching Dr. Who 'cause of him), Hugh Laurie as House, the younger three from Northern Exposure, Eric from Wonderfalls, Adam Brody | | Sunday, February 4th, 2007 | | 8:51 pm |
My car hates winter. Winter isn't too fond of my car either.
Thanks to below zero temperatures all weekend, my car's battery is dead. It's to be expected because it happens during every cold snap. I'm not even fazed or bothered by it. It wouldn't turn over and I thought, "Well, I'll deal with it tomorrow 'cause I'm not standing out in the dark and cold to deal with this tonight." I'll ring AAA tomorrow and very likely have my car dragged down the street to be looked at by the mechanic. I might have the belts changed as long as it's there. | | Thursday, January 11th, 2007 | | 1:24 pm |
What I've been watching THERE ARE PROBABLY SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN THIS POST.Thanks to Netflix (and Xmas), I've got loads to see without cable. I now own the first three seasons of one of my all-time favorite shows, Northern Exposure. It's almost better than I remember it being. There's definitely nothing on television now that's as literary or smart as it. I've tried to watch that Men in Trees show because it's been compared to Northern Exposure, but it's nothing like it. A quirky town in Alaska with Anne Heche as the outsider from the big city just doesn't cut it. I think I'd need another post entirely to talk about how wonderful Northern Exposure is because it's a defininely cultural moment for me. The show that's been the biggest surprise to me is Big Love. I'm halfway through and I can't wait for the new discs to show up at my door (especially because 12 episodes are spread out on five DVDs). The world of Mormon compounds and polygamy interests me. The fictional dramatization of it has not let me down. The Henrickson family lives in closeted polygamy because they have left their community and now own a successful home store (like Lowes or Home Depot). The Henricksons are still tied to the Juniper Creek compound by early loans for the business. The family, especially the husband Bill and first wife Barb, want all ties to the compound cut. This is complicated by second wife Nicki being the daughter of the compound's "prophet" and leader Roman. I've also been watching two series that everyone said were really awful--the third seasons of both The O.C. and The L Word. Having been warned of their terrible plotlines and annoying new characters, none of it seemed so bad. I'm almost glad that The O.C. is cancelled (although the CW wants it). I think that Julie Cooper should get her own show. Through three seasons, she's been the best, most consistently entertaining character. Her daughter Kaitlin is almost as fun to watch. I get The O.C. with all of its "ironic" winks to 90210 and its Melrose Place plot twists. I watched those shows the first time around. Josh Schwartz is cute, but he ran out of good material after year two. Anytime I'm glad that a main character is being killed off is curtains for a show in my opinion. They did to Shane what was done to Brian Kinney--had her make uncharacteristic choices that softened her and made her more "likeable." They gave Dana breast cancer, which is because the actress wanted to leave the show, but they could've taken out a few more characters with her, like the simpering Tina, in some fiery soap opera-like car over a mountain. (Yeah, that's about how their plotlines have been going, so it's fitting!) As much as I want to like Jenny--because there's a little bit of Jenny to me, but thankfully more Alice--this season made me hate her. I've got the wedding episode to go and I've heard that's a pretty good one. | | Saturday, January 6th, 2007 | | 12:41 pm |
Yea! New to me!
My sister called me yesterday afternoon to tell me that within the month she will be donating her nearly new computer to me! I will have a CD burner! I will be able to download and send songs! I will be able to waste hours on You Tube! If you're wondering, yes, this news requires all those exclamation points. I have been using this old computer that does little more than slowing down and freezing up and perhaps getting me my e-mail correspondence. | | Thursday, January 4th, 2007 | | 12:00 pm |

Sadly, he's not Swarley yet
Tonight, all the crappy things made me laugh. It's dropped about thirty degrees since yesterday and will likely freeze overnight, so I went to fill up my car with gas and Heet. To get into my car, I had to open the passenger door and lean over to unlock the driver's side because that side always freezes shut. After filling up, I went in to pay for the gas and Heet and anti-freeze wiper fluid and oil. I asked the cashier to open the Heet, but he opened the wiper fluid too. It spilled down the front of my coat, then the Heet spilled as I was putting it in the car. When I got back to my apartment, I soaked my coat in a cold Dreft bath. I just wrung it out and nearly fell about three times in the tub because a winter coat soaking wet is heavy. I was laughing throughout all of this, even when I was swearing as well. My roommate's friend bought her the first season of How I Met Your Mother on DVD, so I watched two episodes before hanging up my coat to dry: the one where Lily goes to Marshall's family Thanksgiving in St. Cloud, MN and one where Robin and Barney play laser tag. I don't need to have the DVDs, but I'm not complaining. I'm so watching the whole season by the end of the week. |
